A new analysis issued by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) has revealed a serious deterioration in the humanitarian situation in Sudan, with nearly 19.5 million people around 41% of the population facing high levels of acute food insecurity, during the warnings of a further worsening crisis within the upcoming lean season between June and September.
According to the report, approximately 135,000 people are living in conditions classified as (catastrophe or famine,) while more than five million people are facing emergency levels of food insecurity, and nearly 14 million are experiencing acute food crises.
The report warned that 14 areas in North Darfur, South Darfur, and South Kordofan are at risk of sliding into famine if the conflict continues and restrictions on humanitarian access intensify.
It also projected that around 825,000 children under the age of five could suffer from severe acute malnutrition during 2026, reflecting the scale of the rapidly deteriorating health and humanitarian conditions.
The report stressed that the ongoing war, mass displacement, collapse of essential health services, and difficulties in delivering humanitarian aid are major factors driving the crisis toward more dangerous levels. It called for urgent measures to end the fighting and expand humanitarian response efforts to avert a larger catastrophe.
