Kushayb Defence Calls for Sudan to Contribute to Darfur Victims’ Compensation

Sudanese voices Sun/May /31st [Sudanese voices follow up] The defense team of Ali Abd-Al-Rahman, known as “Kushayb,” has requested the International Criminal Court (ICC) to force the Sudanese government to contribute to compensation for victims of crimes committed in Darfur, alongside the Trust Fund for Victims affiliated with the Court. In a submission presented to the judges, the defense argued that Sudan carries direct legal responsibility for reparations to the victims, based on principles of international law and UN Security Council Resolution 1593, which obliges Khartoum to cooperate with the International Criminal Court. The defense also called for the Sudanese authorities to be required to cooperate in tracing assets linked to compensation claims and to freeze or seize them when necessary to ensure victims’ rights. The request follows the court’s ruling in December 2025, which sentenced Kushayb to 20 years in prison after convicting him of war crimes and crimes against humanity during the Darfur conflict.
