A regular force in Jabal Awliya locality undertook the arrest of journalist Miah Al-Nil Mubarak while she was covering middle school examination sessions at one of the area’s schools, following an invitation from teachers to report on the exams.
According to available information, the force took her to an interrogation room, where her phone and personal bag were searched. She was accused of filming with the intent of sending coordinates for what was alleged to be military support to target the school. She was detained for 12 hours, from 10:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m.
Later, she was charged for using fake press ID, and a report was filed against her at the police station and field charges of pretending to be a journalist. She was also questioned about details of her personal life, including her tribal affiliation and the reasons for her divorce.
This raises questions about the relevance of tribal affiliation and social status to professional journalistic work or whether such lines of questioning reflect a form of discrimination and racism in another guise.
