Large areas of Jebel Marra ( Marra mountain) in Central Darfur are witnessing a growing outbreak of monkeypox within the deterioration of healthcare services and a shortage of medical supplies.
Mohamed Abdelrahman Al-Nayer, official spokesperson for the Sudan Liberation Army Movement, said the number of infections has reached 347 cases across the areas of Golo, Deribat, Jawa, Suni, Yara, Dira, Berta, Falqa, Foqori, Sortony, and Abunqa, with cases continuing to rise.
He explained that weak healthcare services, the absence of qualified medical staff, shortages of medicines, and difficulties accessing hospitals due to poor roads and limited transportation have all worsened the health crisis in the region.
Al-Nayer added that humanitarian interventions remain limited despite the presence of organizations such as Médecins Sans Frontières, stressing that current capacities are insufficient to address the scale of the crisis.
He called on the United Nations and humanitarian organizations to intervene urgently and help rehabilitate closed health centers and hospitals, warning that the continued spread of the disease could develop into a wider humanitarian catastrophe.
